Editor's Review
Tucked away in the greenery of Karen, the Oloolua Nature Trail offers a 5-km escape into a dense, indigenous forest that feels miles away from Nairobi’s urban bustle. Access is strictly managed via the eCitizen portal, so ensure you have your account and digital payment ready before you arrive, as the gate staff do not handle cash transactions.
If you find the main trail too demanding or simply want a change of pace, the nearby Karen Blixen Museum offers a more relaxed, historically rich walking experience that is much easier to navigate for those not looking for a full-day hike.
The Cost: Entry fees are approximately KSH 200 for Kenyan citizens, KSH 400 for residents, and KSH 600 for non-residents. Ensure you carry extra for snacks like smokies or eggs, as there is no full-service restaurant on-site.
The Experience: Visiting Oloolua is a raw, physical experience. The trails are largely unpaved and can be rugged, so sturdy hiking shoes are essential, especially during the rainy season when paths become muddy. You will spend your time trekking through thick canopy cover, navigating to the waterfall, and exploring the cave, making this a moderate-intensity outing.
What you can see: The highlights include a natural waterfall, a historic cave once used by freedom fighters, a serene riverside bamboo clearing, and an eagle hide. The forest is also a haven for birdwatchers who enjoy the melodious calls of native species throughout the trail.
Overall, Oloolua is a hidden gem for those who prefer quiet exploration over crowded tourist spots. While the lack of reliable transport and signage requires some advance planning, the peace and natural beauty you encounter make the effort well worth it for any outdoor lover.

Explorer Ken's Advice
"Head straight to the riverside clearing with the bamboo grove for the most tranquil and photogenic picnic spot in the forest."
Things to Consider
Ride-hailing apps like Uber struggle to locate the entrance, so arrange for a private taxi or have a dedicated driver waiting to avoid being stranded.

A nice trail in Karen, the journey getting there is nice as well with a lot of greenery. Features a waterfall, a cave and a riverside clearing with bamboo. Not sure what an eagle hide is but they have one as well. Ensure you have your ECitizen logged in to pay or create one at the gate. Visited after probably 8 years. It does feel a bit run down. And could use more signs as well. The map at the entrance doesn't make much sense if you don't know where you started from. Otherwise a good time out in quiet nature. Absolutely loved the birds, very melodious. See the videos below.

Looking for a place to recharge? This is the perfect place. Some few things to note: 1. I highly recommend buying tickets in advance 2. If you wanna buy at the gate, ensure you have sufficient amount in your account as cash payment is not accepted. 3. Plan your transport in advance, there's no local matatus nearby. 4. Carry a meal if you're planning to spend a whole day there as only snacks are available inside ie. Smokies, eggs, fruit juice and some fruits.
