Editor's Review
Subira House is a beautifully restored 1800s mansion nestled in the heart of Lamu Town, offering a tranquil oasis of Swahili architecture and lush courtyards. As there are no cars on Lamu Island, access is via boat from the airstrip followed by a short walk through the historic, narrow stone streets of the town.
For a budget-friendly alternative to private excursions, take a stroll through the local Lamu markets or visit the nearby public beaches, which offer a glimpse into the island's authentic daily life without the need for guided tours.
The Cost: Rates vary by room type and season, typically falling into the mid-to-high range for the island. Expect to pay premium prices for boutique accommodation, while meals are priced based on fresh, locally sourced ingredients requested from the daily menu.
The Experience: Staying here is about slowing down and embracing the 'pole pole' lifestyle. The terrain involves navigating the traditional, unpaved sandy alleys of Lamu Town, so pack comfortable, flat footwear. The house itself is a labyrinth of quiet nooks, courtyards, and terraces designed for reading, meditation, and complete relaxation.
What you can get: Highlights include homemade sourdough bread, freshly ground peanut butter, moringa omelettes, and access to personalized boat trips for snorkeling and sunset dhow sailing. The house also features a charming front bar and regular yoga sessions.
Subira House is a sanctuary for those who value sustainability and authentic hospitality over mass-market luxury, providing a deeply personal connection to the history and community of Lamu.

We stayed there for 3 nights. Such a wonderful place, well curated with wonderful art and lots of comfortable nooks to grab your book and relax. Even though it was fully booked we never felt the place crowded,it felt serene. It has various little gardens/courtyards with hidden corners that you could find privacy. Friendly stuff, cosy rooms and wonderful atmosphere. Their breakfast is served in a nice terrace with a nice view of the surrounding houses. It is simple, satisfying and with homemade produce. The peanut butter is amazing, the loafers made on the day by the cooks and their moringa omelette is an excellent choice. They also have a lovely bar on the front. We are so happy we got to stay there.

Subira House is a gem in Lamu town. We got the roof top room which has its own private terrasse overlooking the old fort and ocean. The owners and staff were incredibly kind, helpful and attentive, catering our whole stay in Lamu to our needs. We had dinner, coffee, breakfast and a huge amount of fish samosas at their place. Dinner is not a la carte, but you can ask the cook in the morning what you want to eat. Everything is fresh and most veggies come from their permaculture farm. This is an eco certified hotel: dry toilets, no pool, careful use of resources, but you got to stay with people who care for the community in Lamu and the environnement. Everyday we got to discover places and spend time on the sea, easy boat trips to snorkeling or swimming places were organized for us. Absolutely loved our stay there. Thank you Christina and Paul!

Subira House is a true gem. It is a beautiful oasis that makes you feel right at home. Everyone who works there is kind, generous, warm... We stopped there everyday to have coffee (some of the best, hands down - thank you Joshua and Enock) and their delicious breakfast. Homemade everything - shoutout to John for his bread and freshly made peanut butter, and Kennedy and Rosemary for always looking after us. We'll be back to stay and for the yoga and dinner.

Recommended. We will return. We are currently staying here and it is magnificent. If you are stressed when you arrive, for sure you will have to be wheeled out on account of being soooo relaxed. The breakfast is great. Also the dinner we had was delicious. The staff are wonderful with their big, easy Kenyan smiles. They did all they could to help us enjoy your stay. Only good words for them. I noticed all the other guests appeared very happy too which added to the positive atmosphere. Also recommend you book an evening sailing trip to see the sunset on a dhow. Book it with the hotel manager Mohammed. We found all the local people on the island very friendly.

Subira House is a majestic oasis in the heart of Lamu Town!! The house itself is decorated in the traditional Swaheli style with many cute little terraces overlooking the town and gardens below. The bedrooms are comfortable. All the ingredients for breakfast and dinner are locally sourced or home grown and cooked with so much attention to detail. But what is outstanding is the hospitality from Christina and Paul - they have lived here 30 years and really care so much about Lamu town and make you feel so welcome. I joined them for dinner on a few nights, visited their farm and went for a yoga class in town. I couldn't recommend this place enough. Thank you Subira House, Christina, Paul and all the wonderful staff.
