Editor's Review
African Corner Lamu is a charming, community-focused boutique nestled in the winding, sandy alleys of Shela village. Founded by the passionate Nyambura Wahu, this space serves as both a retail shop and a cultural hub. Because Shela is a pedestrian-only area, visitors should be prepared for a scenic walk through the village lanes to reach the shop, as motorized transport is non-existent on the island.
For a budget-friendly way to enjoy the area, take a quiet stroll along the Shela beachfront just a few minutes away to watch the dhows sail by, or engage with local artisans working in the nearby village workshops to see the creative process firsthand.
The Cost: Entry to the shop is free. Prices for handcrafted jewelry, leather goods, and artisanal sculptures typically range from KSH 1,500 for smaller accessories to KSH 10,000 for intricate, larger art pieces.
The Experience: Visiting African Corner is an immersive, slow-paced experience. You will navigate the unpaved, sandy paths of Shela, which requires comfortable, flat sandals or walking shoes. Once inside, the atmosphere is intimate and welcoming, designed for conversation and discovery rather than a quick retail transaction.
What you can get: You can find high-quality, authentic Kenyan jewelry, unique leather cuffs, and rare sculptures, including distinctive Turkana art. Every purchase supports vulnerable children from Mararani village, blending your shopping with meaningful social impact.
Overall, African Corner Lamu is a must-visit for anyone seeking a genuine connection to Lamu’s artistic spirit. It is more than a store; it is a vital part of the Shela community fabric that rewards those who take the time to explore its shelves.

One of my favorite jewelery and accessory stores in the world! I bought a pair of earrings and leather cuff here that I wear practically everyday. They remind me of Kenya and all the beautiful souls of Lamu!
