Editor's Review
Kazuri Beads Factory, nestled in the serene Karen area of Nairobi, offers a unique window into the world of fair-trade artisan jewelry. While the location is easily accessible by taxi or private car, visitors should note that it operates as both a functional workshop and a retail showroom, making it a professional, albeit somewhat commercialized, experience compared to open-air Maasai markets.
If you find the showroom prices too steep, consider visiting the nearby Karen Blixen Museum or taking a stroll through the lush gardens of the surrounding Karen area for a budget-friendly way to enjoy the neighborhood without the retail pressure.
The Cost: Factory tours are complimentary and highly recommended to understand the production process. Finished jewelry and pottery items vary in price, generally catering to the international market; expect to pay in USD or the equivalent in KES, with credit cards accepted.
The Experience: The visit is entirely indoor and wheelchair-friendly, featuring paved, level surfaces throughout the factory and showroom. You will move through the production area to watch artisans at work before transitioning to the retail space, requiring very little physical exertion.
What you can get: You can purchase high-quality handmade ceramic beads, unique necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. The site also offers a deep look into a social enterprise founded in 1975 that currently empowers over 300 local single mothers through sustainable employment.
Kazuri is an essential stop for those who value the story behind their souvenirs. While the environment is polished and distinct from traditional markets, the combination of a free educational tour and the opportunity to support a long-standing women's cooperative makes it a worthwhile visit.

Explorer Ken's Advice
"Request a hands-on workshop session to make your own bracelet; it is far more memorable than just browsing the showroom."
Things to Consider
Prices are often quoted in USD and can be significantly higher than local market rates due to the premium location and branding.

Founded in 1975, Kazuri started as a small initiative to help single mothers in Nairobi gain employment. Today, it supports over 300 women artisans and is a certified Fair Trade producer, shipping jewellery and pottery all over the world. Excellent place to buy genuine beads, pottery items. Prices are in US dollars usually and credit cards are accepted. There is a 30 min tour of the factory and then the showroom where you can buy. Profits go towards to helping single mothers here

Enjoyed our visit in Kazuri Beads! Philip did a free tour of the factory and learned how they create them from start to finish. The craftsmanship and mission of Kazuri beads is definitely worth a visit! We also made our own bracelets with Lucy and Salome who were awesome and made the whole experience fun!

The concept of a bead workshop to help single mothers is great. Not sure how it went from this concept to a place that charges an arm and a leg with a less than enthused guide in Karen, a posh area of Nairobi. I guess it’s one way to nonprofit-wash a business and exploit the locals. New location is in a fancy office park.

I took a tour of the factory which was very interesting. Philip was a helpful guide and answered all my questions. There is a nice gift shop where you can buy finished jewelry as well as individual beads. This is a great way to support local!
