Editor's Review

Karweti Waterfalls in Githunguri, Kiambu, offers a raw, unfiltered escape into nature where the primary attraction is the cooling mist and the rhythmic sound of cascading water. Located just a short drive from the city, this spot is ideal for those who prefer rugged, natural trails over manicured park paths.

If you find the main falls area crowded or the water levels low, explore the surrounding Githunguri region, which boasts at least four distinct waterfalls within a few kilometers of each other, offering a great opportunity for a longer, self-guided hiking circuit.

The Cost: Entry is generally free as it is an open natural site, though you should be prepared to pay a small token fee to local landowners or guides if they assist with directions or trail access; always have M-Pesa ready for these informal transactions.

The Experience: Visiting Karweti is a physical endeavor that requires walking on unpaved, uneven terrain. It is best suited for those who enjoy moderate hiking and want to disconnect, as the infrastructure is minimal and the focus is entirely on the natural, tranquil environment.

What you can see: You can see four distinct waterfall sites in the immediate vicinity, lush greenery, and local birdlife. It is a fantastic spot for meditation, photography, and setting up a basic camp to reset your mind away from the urban grind.

Verdict: While the environmental changes have impacted water volume, Karweti remains a top-tier local destination for a low-cost, high-reward nature retreat, provided you are prepared for a hike rather than a luxury excursion.

"It's a good place to go relax and enjoy the slow breeze of cold air as water splashes from atop the waterfall. Regrettably, the river is on the verge of drying, perhaps due to climate issues; I can't tell. I'll share 3 pictures depicting what the fall was 2 years ago and what it is now." - Kelvin M. The Wild Heart of the Savannah

In 2026, the best safari isn't the one with the most lion sightings; it's the one in a private conservancy where you're the only vehicle for miles. The Maasai Mara, Samburu, and Tsavo remain the cornerstone of any Kenyan journey. We recommend focusing on the conservancies where private concessions limit vehicle numbers, ensuring a truly intimate encounter with the Great Migration and the rare Northern Species like the Grevy's zebra.

Coastal Serenity & Marine Magic

From the white sands of Watamu to the mystical lanes of Lamu Old Town, the Kenyan coast offers a blend of Swahili heritage and marine biodiversity. 2026 sees a massive surge in kitesurfing and ocean-to-plate dining experiences that prioritize small-scale local fishermen. Discover Diani for world-class luxury and Kilifi for the artistic soul.

The High-Altitude Challenge

Kenya's mountains offer some of the most rigorous and rewarding trekking in Africa. Mt. Kenya, the Aberdares, and the various escarpments of the Rift Valley go beyond the typical safari experience. As the lead authority in Kenyan hiking, we provide essential data on trail conditions, elevation gain, and the best-vetted local guides to ensure your safety and enjoyment.
