Editor's Review

Jannah Lamu is a masterfully curated boutique hotel in Shela, conceptualized by Anna Trzebinski, offering a fusion of modern luxury and traditional Swahili architecture. Located in the serene village of Shela, the property is reached via a short boat transfer from Manda Island followed by a walk through the village’s sandy, narrow alleyways, which may be challenging for those with limited mobility or heavy luggage.

For a budget-friendly alternative to private dhow charters, take a local public ferry between Shela and Lamu Town for a fraction of the cost, which provides a similar scenic view of the channel and the passing dhows.

The Cost: Rates are premium, typically ranging from $250 to $500+ per night depending on the season and suite size, with additional costs for dhow excursions and bespoke concierge services. Always confirm if breakfast and airport transfers are included in your specific booking package.

The Experience: The experience is one of refined relaxation. The terrain in Shela is entirely sand-based, requiring comfortable, flat footwear. Movement within the property involves navigating stairs to reach the stunning rooftop deck, which offers panoramic views of the Indian Ocean and the village, providing a quiet sanctuary for lounging and sunset watching.

What you can get: You can enjoy spacious, high-design suites with well-stocked kitchens, personalized concierge service, curated interiors, and access to private, high-quality dhows for excursions to Manda Bay. The property is renowned for its attentive staff and the peaceful, culturally immersive atmosphere of the Shela waterfront.

Jannah Lamu stands out as an exceptional choice for those who value style, privacy, and impeccable service. While the lack of motorized transport in Shela requires a bit of physical adjustment, the tranquil environment and the hotel's commitment to comfort make it a premier destination in the Lamu archipelago.

We had a wonderful four-day stay in Shela, a true little paradise that combines modern comfort with authentic charm. The apartment is beautiful, perfectly equipped, and offers breathtaking views. The panoramic terrace is an incredible highlight, ideal for taking in the beauty of the surroundings and enjoying the unique atmosphere of the village. A heartfelt thank you to Chai, an exceptional host who truly made our stay unforgettable. Always attentive, available, and warm, he went above and beyond to ensure we felt comfortable and cared for at all times. From the airport welcome to our departure, everything was seamless, and his team reflected the same kindness and professionalism. Thanks to his thoughtful recommendations and deep knowledge of the area, we enjoyed unique experiences, including the magical sunset Dhow cruise, which we highly recommend. An incredible stay we will never forget, made extraordinary by Chai, his team, and the wonderful people of Shela and Lamu.

Jannah Lamu was absolutely amazing! The terrace and view from the room were spectacular and the rooftop deck is such a highlight (I hear they’re adding a pool soon, which will make it even better!) The location is perfect — quiet, relaxing, and just what you want in Shela. All the staff were fab, especially Chai, who is the sweetest and most friendly guy. The room was massive, with a full outdoor living area and a nicely stocked kitchen, and the decor throughout is tasteful and beautiful — everything feels carefully curated with style. They also have three fantastic dhows and a day aboard one sailing to Manda Bay Lodge was an amazing way to spend the day. I wouldn’t stay anywhere else in Lamu — Jannah Lamu is the perfect place to unwind and soak in the beauty of Shela! Thanks Chai and team for a most perfect weekend in Shela!

Everything You Need to Know About Discovering Kenya

As we move deeper into 2026, the definition of travel is evolving. No longer content with superficial sightings, the modern traveler seeks depth, purpose, and local engagement. This guide is curated to help you navigate the diverse ecosystems of Kenya—from our high-altitude massifs to our hidden coastal creek retreats and exclusive conservation-first conservancies.

  • Vetted 2026 Travel Rates & Tips
  • Sustainable & Carbon-Neutral Stays
  • Exclusive Hidden Gem Itineraries

The Wild Heart of the Savannah

In 2026, the best safari isn't the one with the most lion sightings; it's the one in a private conservancy where you're the only vehicle for miles. The Maasai Mara, Samburu, and Tsavo remain the cornerstone of any Kenyan journey. We recommend focusing on the conservancies where private concessions limit vehicle numbers, ensuring a truly intimate encounter with the Great Migration and the rare Northern Species like the Grevy's zebra.

Coastal Serenity & Marine Magic

From the white sands of Watamu to the mystical lanes of Lamu Old Town, the Kenyan coast offers a blend of Swahili heritage and marine biodiversity. 2026 sees a massive surge in kitesurfing and ocean-to-plate dining experiences that prioritize small-scale local fishermen. Discover Diani for world-class luxury and Kilifi for the artistic soul.

The High-Altitude Challenge

Kenya's mountains offer some of the most rigorous and rewarding trekking in Africa. Mt. Kenya, the Aberdares, and the various escarpments of the Rift Valley go beyond the typical safari experience. As the lead authority in Kenyan hiking, we provide essential data on trail conditions, elevation gain, and the best-vetted local guides to ensure your safety and enjoyment.
