Core Activities

Editor's Review

JamboHouse Lamu is a charming, owner-operated guesthouse nestled in the historic heart of Lamu Old Town. It offers a quintessential Swahili coast experience, prioritizing personal hospitality over high-end luxury. Be aware that the property is located within the labyrinthine streets of the Old Town, meaning you will need to navigate narrow, unpaved pedestrian paths upon arrival, and there is no vehicle access to the front door.

For those looking to explore the area on a tighter budget, the public beach at Shela provides a free, stunning alternative for a day of sun and sand, easily reachable by a short, affordable boat ride from the nearby jetty.

The Cost: Rates are highly competitive for the region, typically ranging from budget-friendly ground-floor rooms to slightly more expensive upper-floor rooms with better natural light and connectivity. Expect to pay a fraction of what you would at the larger beachfront resorts, with breakfast often included or available for a small, reasonable supplement.

The Experience: Staying here feels like being welcomed into a local home. The infrastructure is simple and authentic, featuring traditional architecture with stairs that require physical mobility. The atmosphere is quiet and communal, centered around the rooftop terrace where guests gather to relax, eat, and plan their daily adventures.

What you can get: You can get a highly personalized orientation to Lamu, including connections to trusted boat captains and local guides. The guesthouse provides essential amenities like filtered water, power banks for outages, and delicious, freshly prepared continental breakfasts featuring local fruits and signature banana pancakes.

JamboHouse is a standout choice for travelers who value human connection and local insight over polished, corporate hotel experiences. While the building is modest and the WiFi is localized, the unparalleled hospitality and expert guidance make it an essential base for anyone wanting to truly understand the magic of Lamu.

Jambo house is absolutely fantastic! Arnold, the owner, is a hospitality genius, he has thought absolutely everything through, there is so much attention to detail. Really great recommendations and advice given about the island, really appreciated these and it made the experience in lamu old town so memorable. There’s great posters on the wall with information, filtered water upon request, power banks to charge and give light in case of power outage, beach towels upon request & more. The terrace is a lovely place to chill, I really enjoyed eating breakfast there every morning, which may I add was absolutely delicious ( thank you Fred for feeding us so well). We stayed in the downstairs, more affordable room and were upgraded kindly to the one with the attached bathroom. it was perfect for us as we came back late almost every night and were essentially just sleeping in the room. . If you plan on spending more time in the room I would recommend staying on the 1st floor as the bottom room doesn’t have much natrual light and strong wifi connection. Again this wasn’t an issue at all for us but may be useful for others to know. I wouldn’t even call this ‘budget’ accommodation as I see others have, I think jambo house provides all the amenities of any higher end guest house, just for a very affordable price. The bonus though, is the experience that you would get here would be hard to match. Arnold is so kind and has so many interesting and insightful things to share about lamu and goes over and above to make sure you are comfortable & happy.

Remember: you are booking for VALUE. It’s not as polished but I still like it. I recommend it for travelers who journey on a dime. If you want something fancy, you’ll pay double and triple. The owner lives and works here so you’re supporting a small business. Arnold is very helpful and can provide continental breakfast: choice of omelette, three types of other eggs, or banana pancake (like a crepe to me). If you order the breakfast, there is also freshly squeezed juice, toast, and fruit (maybe watermelon or mango). The WiFi only worked on the second floor, never in my room (first floor) and I never checked the ground floor for WiFi. Sheets and towels are well used but I don’t mind bc it’s not going to waste. Overall, I am very satisfied. Accommodations are local / motel quality BUT again you book this place for value.

If you want a local experience this is the place. Arnold toke time patiently to explain everything to us before we get out of the accommodation. You can have the tours, the tips, everything explain from him. Fred that work in the accommodation make the best pancakes and clean the rooms super super! Just super nice and friendly people. Room is simple but have everything that you need if you are into a simple way to travel. Truly recommend and Hope a day be back! Lamu is a gem!

Arnold has a lovely guest house he is running. I looked forward to an excellent breakfast with excellent service on the sunny terrace rooftop every morning. The rooms are good enough, he was able to add a bed as were two people. The shower and toilet and room were cleaned everyday. Arnold himself guided us comprehensively on all things Lamu, he promptly connected us to trusted guides and boat captain and the himself was always available to clarify, guide and direct us during our entire duration of the 6 day trip. Asante Sana Arnold.

The Wild Heart of the Savannah

In 2026, the best safari isn't the one with the most lion sightings; it's the one in a private conservancy where you're the only vehicle for miles. The Maasai Mara, Samburu, and Tsavo remain the cornerstone of any Kenyan journey. We recommend focusing on the conservancies where private concessions limit vehicle numbers, ensuring a truly intimate encounter with the Great Migration and the rare Northern Species like the Grevy's zebra.

Coastal Serenity & Marine Magic

From the white sands of Watamu to the mystical lanes of Lamu Old Town, the Kenyan coast offers a blend of Swahili heritage and marine biodiversity. 2026 sees a massive surge in kitesurfing and ocean-to-plate dining experiences that prioritize small-scale local fishermen. Discover Diani for world-class luxury and Kilifi for the artistic soul.

The High-Altitude Challenge

Kenya's mountains offer some of the most rigorous and rewarding trekking in Africa. Mt. Kenya, the Aberdares, and the various escarpments of the Rift Valley go beyond the typical safari experience.
