Editor's Review

Chester View Homestay in Athi River offers a serene sanctuary for those looking to escape the relentless hustle and bustle of Nairobi. While it is tucked away from the city center, its location provides a calm, quiet environment that is increasingly rare to find. Guests should note that because it is a residential-style homestay, arranging your transport in advance is crucial for smooth arrivals and departures.

For those looking to explore the area on a budget, the nearby Athi River town offers local markets and eateries where you can experience authentic Kenyan cuisine at very affordable prices without needing to venture all the way back into the Nairobi city center.

The Cost: Pricing is highly competitive and pocket-friendly, offering excellent value for money. Rates are typically negotiated directly with the host, Barbara, depending on the length of stay and room selection, making it a great budget-conscious choice for both short and long-term stays.

The Experience: Staying here feels like a true home away from home. The property is well-maintained with clean, comfortable, and spacious rooms. The terrain is flat and accessible, featuring a secure compound that is very friendly for families with children. The environment is designed for relaxation, resting, and quiet reflection rather than high-intensity physical activity.

What you can get: You can expect professional and kind hospitality from the host, Barbara, who is frequently praised for going above and beyond for guests. The facility offers clean bathrooms, secure parking, a peaceful atmosphere free from urban noise, and select rooms featuring private balconies for personal relaxation.

Chester View Homestay is a standout choice for travelers who prioritize security, cleanliness, and a peaceful environment. While it requires a bit of travel to reach the main city hubs, the personalized service and serene setting make it a highly recommended spot for families and solo travelers alike.

More Details

"I stayed with my family (my wife and our daughter) twice. The first time for two days after booking a day earlier. We were so lucky to find a spacious room with it's own private balcony and a massive bed (Don't let this go when you arrive and find it among the rooms that are available). The second one was impromptu, however, Barbara went out of her way to let us stay after a very short notice book..." - Emmanuel Wesonga (Google Review)

It's really a nice place, away from the hustle and bustle of Nairobi city (so quietly good). Also pocket friendly and a lot of value for the money. Thanks Barbara, I will be sure to stay again when I come to Nairobi next time!

Everything You Need to Know About Discovering Kenya

As we move deeper into 2026, the definition of travel is evolving. No longer content with superficial sightings, the modern traveler seeks depth, purpose, and local engagement. This guide is curated to help you navigate the diverse ecosystems of Kenya—from our high-altitude massifs to our hidden coastal creek retreats and exclusive conservation-first conservancies.

The Wild Heart of the Savannah

In 2026, the best safari isn't the one with the most lion sightings; it's the one in a private conservancy where you're the only vehicle for miles. The Maasai Mara, Samburu, and Tsavo remain the cornerstone of any Kenyan journey. We recommend focusing on the conservancies where private concessions limit vehicle numbers, ensuring a truly intimate encounter with the Great Migration and the rare Northern Species like the Grevy's zebra.

Coastal Serenity & Marine Magic

From the white sands of Watamu to the mystical lanes of Lamu Old Town, the Kenyan coast offers a blend of Swahili heritage and marine biodiversity. 2026 sees a massive surge in kitesurfing and ocean-to-plate dining experiences that prioritize small-scale local fishermen. Discover Diani for world-class luxury and Kilifi for the artistic soul.

The High-Altitude Challenge

Kenya's mountains offer some of the most rigorous and rewarding trekking in Africa. Mt. Kenya, the Aberdares, and the various escarpments of the Rift Valley go beyond the typical safari experience. As the lead authority in Kenyan hiking, we provide essential data on trail conditions, elevation gain, and the best-vetted local guides to ensure your safety and enjoyment.
