Editor's Review
The Baden-Powell Museum, locally known as Paxtu, is a serene historical sanctuary nestled within the lush grounds of the Outspan Hotel in Nyeri. While it offers a deeply peaceful escape from the bustle of town, visitors should note that it is located within private hotel premises, meaning you must check in at the hotel reception to access the site.
For a budget-friendly alternative if you are just passing through Nyeri, take a quiet walk through the surrounding hotel gardens or explore the nearby town center markets, which offer a more rugged, authentic look at local life without the museum entry fee.
The Cost: Entry to the museum is KSH 500 per person. Dining at the hotel is considered premium; while pricey, the quality of the food and the manicured environment provide high value for a relaxed lunch or tea.
The Experience: Visiting Paxtu is a calm, contemplative experience. The terrain is flat, paved, and easily accessible, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll. You will spend your time moving between the beautifully maintained lawns and the historic cottage, which requires very little physical exertion.
What you can see: The museum houses a unique collection of international Scout memorabilia, including badges and neckerchiefs. You can also view original sketches by Lord Baden-Powell and visit the bedroom where he spent his final days, offering a poignant look at the life of the founder of the Scout movement.
Ultimately, Paxtu is a must-visit for its historical significance and tranquil atmosphere. While the lack of constant, formal guided commentary can be a hurdle, the professional staff and the sheer beauty of the location make it an essential stop for anyone traveling through Nyeri.

The lawns are beautifully maintained, also lush, spacious, and incredibly peaceful. It’s the kind of place where you instantly feel relaxed the moment you walk in. Perfect for a calm afternoon, photos, or simply enjoying the atmosphere. The food is excellent. Yes, it’s a bit on the pricey side, but it is absolutely worth every shilling. The quality, presentation, and taste fully justify the cost. What truly elevates the experience is the staff .. highly professional, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. Their service adds a lot to the overall atmosphere of the place. Overall, it’s a wonderful destination whether you’re visiting for history, leisure, or a great meal in a stunning environment. Highly recommended.

An absolute delight to visit Paxtu. Unfortunately when I visited there was no person there to explain things, but I was lucky to have a local Scout who was there to guide me around. After paying 500 kes to enter from Reception of the Hotel, I got to explore the few rooms that are full of neckerchiefs and badges from people who have visited from around the world. Also got to see some of Baden-Powell's drawings and even the view and his bedroom that he would spend his final days in. Was very memorable and an honour to get to explore. Would have loved more information or graphics to give further context or commentary about Paxtu.
