Editor's Review
The Treetop Gate serves as a gateway to the majestic Aberdare National Park in Nyeri, offering a scenic entry into one of Kenya's most beautiful highland ecosystems. Visitors must be prepared for a journey that demands a reliable 4x4 vehicle, as the road leading up to the gate can be challenging and is not suitable for smaller, low-clearance cars.
For those looking for a budget-friendly way to enjoy the area without committing to full park entry, the scenic drive to the gate itself offers stunning views of the lush landscape and local flora. It is a perfect spot for those who want to experience the cool mountain air and highland greenery on a casual excursion.
The Cost: Entry fees follow KWS standard park regulations: Citizens pay KES 300, Residents KES 600, and Non-Residents USD 52. Remember to factor in vehicle entry fees based on the seating capacity of your car.
The Experience: Visiting the Treetop Gate is a drive-in experience that prioritizes vehicle-based exploration over walking. The terrain is largely unpaved and rugged, requiring passengers to stay within their vehicles for safety and comfort as they navigate the mountain tracks.
What you can see: The area is famous for the breathtaking Chania River falls, lush montane forests, and opportunities to spot diverse birdlife and montane game species. The gate holds historical significance as the entry point to the area famously associated with the Treetop Hotel's legacy.
Ultimately, while the checkout process at the gate can be time-consuming, the sheer beauty of the Aberdares makes the trip worth the effort for those prepared with the right transport and a bit of patience.

Kip's Advice
"Make sure to stop at the Chania River falls for an incredible photo opportunity before you reach the main gate."
Things to Consider
The terrain is rugged and unforgiving; a 4x4 vehicle is mandatory as standard cars will struggle with the road conditions.

This is about the GATE (not the park). Checkout took about an hour to get out. In the States, you drive out. In Kenya, you have to check out. The fastest checkout is 10-15 mins and some times it takes 45 minutes. The internet is a little slow all over Kenya. And the issue? If we book with the internet and then pay at the gate, that confuses the rangers. So why book before you get there? You can save time — BUT it doesn’t always work. Anyway, the people are always nice. The area is beautiful. But it takes so much time.

I wish I could do 10 stars cause the area is great, loved the views, the drive. Though you must have a 4x4 big car cause the landscape is not really healthy for a small car
