Editor's Review
Pwani House is a stunning piece of traditional Swahili architecture located directly on the Lamu seafront. It offers an immersive coastal experience where the hustle and bustle of the island's unique maritime culture meets the tranquility of a private residence. Guests should note that reaching Lamu requires a boat transfer, and the narrow, winding stone paths of the town mean that all exploration is done entirely on foot.
For a budget-friendly alternative or a deeper dive into the local culture, wander through the nearby Lamu Museum or take a low-cost dhow trip across the channel to Shela Beach for a pristine, quiet sandy escape that requires no entry fee.
The Cost: Rates are generally mid-range, though they fluctuate significantly based on the season and room selection. It is advisable to book directly or through reputable platforms to secure the best rates, which typically include breakfast. Always confirm if your booking includes island transfer fees from Manda Airport.
The Experience: Staying here is a sensory experience defined by the sea breeze and the sounds of the Indian Ocean. The infrastructure is historic and authentic, meaning you will navigate stone staircases and narrow alleys typical of Lamu’s UNESCO-listed old town. It is a place for resting, reading on the balcony, and cooling off in the private indoor pool after a humid day of walking.
What you can get: You can enjoy beautifully decorated rooms with traditional Swahili interiors, private balconies with direct ocean views, an indoor swimming pool, and a rooftop deck perfect for sunset drinks. The property is also renowned for its helpful staff who provide personalized local tips for navigating the island.
Pwani House is an excellent choice for those who value atmosphere and authentic design over modern hotel amenities like high-pressure showers. If you can overlook the plumbing quirks, the combination of the rooftop views and the central, historic location makes for a truly memorable Lamu holiday.

Beautiful Swahili house with a breathtaking view of the ocean and private swimming pool. Don’t miss the beautiful rooftop, where you can relax and enjoy the stars at night. Thank you so much to Michael and especially Steve who went above and beyond assisting us with our trip, giving helpful tips and even upgraded us after the first night when the best room became vacant 🙏 Unfortunately no hot water and mediocre pressure in shower.

A beautiful property with a view of the water and a window on the hustle of life on the seashore. Was a unique and serene experience-Lamu is it's own creature on the kenyan coast! Everyone here was warm and helpful and the breakfasts that were included on a nearby (pretty much private when we visited) rooftop were lovely! Thank you Steve and Micheal.

Oh, let me tell you about Pwani House—it's an absolute gem! The moment you step in, you're greeted by these breathtaking views that just sweep you off your feet. The views are just stunning, whether you're in bed, on the balcony, or up on the rooftop. And the house has even a private swimming pool :) The location is top! Everything you need is right there. And the hosts? They're amazing. They made sure I was comfy and gave me awesome recommendations. If you're looking for a slice of paradise, I can't recommend Pwani House enough.

We spent 2 nights of our honeymoon on this place! Awesome location, awesome front water room, the little balcony is a plus! However….. no hot water and the shower is really really bad!!! Overall I would still recommend the place if you don’t mind having a bad cold shower 🥹

The best views. Loved the indoor pool. No hot water. The air-conditioned rooms really made for a comfortable experience in an otherwise humid and mosquito-ridden Lamu.
