Editor's Review

Mombasa Marine Park and Reserve is a premier coastal destination offering a gateway to the vibrant coral reefs of the Indian Ocean. Located conveniently near Mombasa's main beach hubs, access is primarily via boat from the shore, which requires a bit of negotiation with local boat operators. Visitors should be prepared for a lively, sometimes crowded atmosphere, especially during weekends and public holidays.

If the main boat tour feels too busy, take a stroll along the public Nyali beach areas nearby where you can enjoy the ocean breeze and local snacks from beach vendors at a fraction of the cost, providing a relaxing alternative to the busier park activities.

The Cost: Entry fees follow KWS standard rates for marine parks: Citizens pay KSH 130, Residents KSH 300, and Non-Residents USD 17. Expect to pay an additional KSH 1,000 per person for the boat ride, though this price is often negotiable depending on the group size.

The Experience: Visiting the park is an immersive water-based adventure. You will spend most of your time on a boat or in the water, so bring swimming gear and waterproof bags. While the boats are functional, they are basic, and you should expect a wet, salty, and exciting ride out to the reef where you can jump in for snorkeling or swimming.

What you can see: The park features a stunning array of coral gardens, diverse tropical fish species, and occasional sightings of sea turtles. It is an excellent spot for educational marine interaction, allowing visitors to feed fish and observe the delicate underwater ecosystem up close.

In summary, while the logistics of boat hire require a bit of street-smart negotiation, the Mombasa Marine Park remains an essential experience for those wanting to see the hidden beauty beneath the waves of the Kenyan coast.

More Details

"This is an experience one needs to try out when they visit Mombasa. You pay for the permit which is really affordable and then pay for the boat ride which is about 1000 kshs per person (after negotiating). The gents in charge are so kind and I suggest you carry some kshs for a tip. It's really safe and you are given a life jacket. You can even swim if you would like to." - Wolo Walter (Google Review)

Beautiful ocean with so much fish. My kids swam and the divers helped them manoeuvre. Pros, the divers were polite and have all life jackets sizes, cons, the boat looked a little bit dilapidated. I'd have preferred a newer looking boat, but apparently there's a lineup to be followed. Regardess it was a lovely experience.

My expectations let me done You'll feed fish and swim in the ocean. In the park you'll also see a variety of sea creatures. The best time to travel is 10 AM to 1 PM with low tides.

The Wild Heart of the Savannah

In 2026, the best safari isn't the one with the most lion sightings; it's the one in a private conservancy where you're the only vehicle for miles. The Maasai Mara, Samburu, and Tsavo remain the cornerstone of any Kenyan journey. We recommend focusing on the conservancies where private concessions limit vehicle numbers, ensuring a truly intimate encounter with the Great Migration and the rare Northern Species like the Grevy's zebra.

Coastal Serenity & Marine Magic

From the white sands of Watamu to the mystical lanes of Lamu Old Town, the Kenyan coast offers a blend of Swahili heritage and marine biodiversity. 2026 sees a massive surge in kitesurfing and ocean-to-plate dining experiences that prioritize small-scale local fishermen. Discover Diani for world-class luxury and Kilifi for the artistic soul.

The High-Altitude Challenge

Kenya's mountains offer some of the most rigorous and rewarding trekking in Africa. Mt. Kenya, the Aberdares, and the various escarpments of the Rift Valley go beyond the typical safari experience. As the lead authority in Kenyan hiking, we provide essential data on trail conditions, elevation gain, and the best-vetted local guides to ensure your safety and enjoyment.
