Editor's Review
The Karen Blixen Museum offers a rare, preserved window into the 1920s, serving as the former farmhouse of the famed Danish author. Situated in the leafy suburb of Karen, the site is easily accessible from the city center, though visitors must be prepared for a fully digital entry process as cash is not accepted at the gate.
If you are looking to extend your outing without spending much more, the small craft market located right outside the museum gates is a fantastic place to browse local carvings and textiles, often offering a more authentic, budget-friendly souvenir experience than the main gift shop.
The Cost: Entry fees are tiered by status: Non-residents pay USD 12 for adults and USD 6 for children, while Kenyan citizens and East African residents pay significantly reduced rates ranging from KSH 200 to KSH 600. The guided tour of the house is included in the price of your ticket.
The Experience: Visiting here is a relaxed, low-energy activity. The grounds are well-maintained with flat, paved, and gravel pathways that are easy to navigate for most ages. The core of the experience is an escorted walk through the house, where you are led by a guide who narrates the history of the furniture and the property; note that photography is strictly prohibited inside the main house.
What you can see: You will see the original 1920s farmhouse architecture, authentic colonial-era furnishings, and lush, expansive gardens that reflect the estate's former scale. The onsite cafe is a highlight for many, providing a serene environment to enjoy coffee and snacks after your tour.
Ultimately, while the museum is a smaller attraction, its charm lies in its historical preservation. It is an essential stop for anyone wanting to connect with the literary and colonial history of Kenya, provided you come prepared with your digital payment methods ready.

The Karen Blixen Museum is charming but a bit limited. You can’t take photos inside the house, and there’s very little to read on your own, so you mostly depend on the guide. On the plus side, the guide is very friendly, the house is beautifully preserved, and enjoying a cup of coffee during the visit was definitely the highlight.

Who hasn’t seen Out of Africa or read the book? If you’re in Niarobi looking for an interesting place to visit, then you just found it. The Biden house beautifully preserved with many original furnishings. You are given an escorted tour of the house and property with interesting description of history of the property. Watch the movie before you go to better appreciate the history of this once 6000 acre estate and coffee plantation!

Nice place to visit when in Nairobi. Buying tickets requires at least a phone and wifi, mpesa or card, no cash. Price includes a tour guide who walks you through the house. You'll definitely get more out of it If you have read her books or watched the movie Out of Africa.

Interesting spot to visit. The guide was lovely and helpful, toilets are not clean, the cafe is nice, a small market is always there. A gift shop as well. If you’re a movie fan, watch “out of Africa “ before you go there

Gorgeous place, set much a must visit when in Nairobi. It is amazing to realise that all the area today known as “Karen” once was one families plot of land. Hardly imaginable….
