Editor's Review
Dudu Royal Hotel, formerly known as Dudu Villas, is a budget-oriented property transitioning into a backpacker-style lodge in Lamu. Situated about 20 minutes away from the main town and the popular Shela beach, it offers a more secluded, albeit rustic, environment for travelers. Prospective guests should be aware that the facility has faced significant challenges regarding maintenance and reservation reliability.
For a more reliable and scenic coastal experience nearby, consider spending your day at the public beaches in Shela Village, which offer pristine white sands and a better variety of established cafes and restaurants that are easier to access and consistently maintained.
The Cost: Entry to the swimming pool is 500 KSH per person. Room rates vary significantly based on the booking platform, though travelers should be prepared for potential issues with online payments and reservations.
The Experience: Visiting Dudu Royal is a low-key, unpretentious experience that requires a flexible mindset. The terrain around the property consists of typical Lamu sandy paths, which are best navigated on foot. The atmosphere is quiet, though guests should be prepared for a self-service style of hospitality rather than a full-service hotel experience.
What you can get: You can get access to a swimming pool and basic accommodation in very spacious villa-style rooms. The property is surrounded by the local charm of the Lamu landscape, providing a quiet retreat away from the tourist-heavy areas.
Final Verdict: Dudu Royal Hotel is a hit-or-miss option best suited for budget travelers who value space and privacy. While the location offers a peaceful break from the town, the inconsistent maintenance and booking reliability mean it is essential to manage your expectations and verify all details directly with management before arrival.

Explorer Ken's Advice
"If you find a room that is clean, the villas are incredibly spacious and offer a rare, quiet alternative to the crowded Lamu town center."
Things to Consider
Cleanliness standards are inconsistent and booking reliability is poor; always call ahead to confirm your reservation rather than relying on online platforms.

The pool was a malaria pond. 500 Ksh per person on entry. Menu was written on waitresses hand which only offered Kenya Cane. Staff demanded money first before serving. That's when we made our exit stage left. Hasta la Vista!

Cleanliness is really below par, the mosquito nets were dusty and the toilets disgusting! If you manage to get the management to thoroughly clean your room it's very nice

Quite hidden with not very good accessibility, looks old and I kept being stopped with stuff asking where I was going. Did not feel that welcome. The owner at the entrance was however very friendly, can't explain the difference in hospitality. Has swimming pool and shop

Cancelled my online booking without explanations. Booked on Jumia and paid via mpesa : the website confirmed availability. Was surprised a few day later receiving a communication from Jumia that Dudu villas refused to honour the reservation: they didn't even bother to provide an explanation.
